Covering cosmetology fundamentals, 11 classic cuts and 9 colour techniques; while also providing students with the confidence to advise and educate salon clients, the cosmetology program available at our TONI&GUY® Hairdressing Academy in Manteca, California, produces graduates who are both salon- and state board-ready. We ensure that our students come away with a well-rounded skills set, an understanding of the hairdresser’s role, confidence in providing customer service, and extremely marketable real-world salon experience. The first step in the application process is to bring proof of a high school graduation level education, a government issued ID and a birth certificate or social security card.

TONI&GUY Cosmetology Kit

To assist you in your education, our cosmetology school offers a student kit loaded with learning materials and professional-quality gear. If it will help you become a beauty professional or make someone’s hair look great, it’s in the kit – everything from shears, hair brushes, and irons to mannequin heads, step-by-step tutorials, and so much more!

Our Cosmetology Classes

The small, structured cosmetology classes at our TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy are the venue in which students discuss theory and begin developing their skills. They are taught to approach hairstyling and client work creatively by becoming technically proficient in both haircutting and haircoloring and learning how to combine techniques. In addition to these technical skills, soft skills (like client relations) are also part of the cosmetology curriculum. Our focus is to teach young hairdressers-in-training how to cut and color hair so they are confident working behind a chair fulfilling any request of a salon client.

At our cosmetology school, we believe in communicating a haircut before completing it. Accordingly, our students are taught to think through and understand the 3-D process of drawing a haircut and then bringing that vision to life. These skills and knowledge help students master the two most important things for any successful hairdresser: making someone feel comfortable in the chair and confident when they walk out the door. Such knowhow builds trust with your clients and keeps them coming back.

Cosmetology Program Progression

The first thing taught to our cosmetology students is how to harness their creativity. Then they kick off the basics – learning the tools, simple techniques, processes, and theory – during the very first month at our cosmetology school. Students then move on to hair coloring while reinforcing the basics. It is during this phase that understanding the color wheel, the TIGI line of hair color products, and how the two relate becomes very important. Correcting and even enhancing a client’s hair color round out the hair coloring techniques.

Hair cutting techniques (much like the typically state-mandated topics of electricity, chemistry, nails, facials, sanitation, etc.) are a common theme throughout the program, with advanced techniques emerging when students become juniors. Around this same time, students begin spending a portion of their time on the clinic floor learning soft skills, like client communication, the consultation process, how to market themselves, portfolio building, resume creation, and more. Once students reach the senior level our focus shifts toward maximizing their clinic floor experience, working to ensure they service as many heads of hair as they can. The final portion of the program is the Graduating Senior level, which is broken down into 3 levels, A, B, and C. Students will perform a mock state board test in Graduating Senior A. Once passed, our students will move onto Graduating Senior B and C (salon ready).

Cosmetology Career Preparation

At our TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy, we know that real-world experience often leads to real-world success for our aspiring beauty professionals. This is why delivering hands-on hair services to salon clients in a true salon environment is such a large part of our cosmetology program.

Our cosmetology school graduates frequently and unsurprisingly go on to become successful salon hair stylists. However, with such a richly diverse (and ever-changing) industry, our graduates also hold positions as editorial stylists, mobile hairdressers, and runway/fashion show hairdressers, as well as hair coloring, hair cutting, and hair extension specialists. After gaining a few years of industry experience, some of our cosmetology school graduates have even moved on to become knowledgeable cosmetology instructors intent on mentoring the next generation of beauty professionals.
